Description
Set of 2 custom framed original artwork prints in black, white, grey. Signed by artist, G. Mukulu. Wonderful scenery depicting life by a river. Shows people working in boats, standing near huts by the waters edge, and walking on a path carrying a basket. Very nicely detailed. We originally believed that they could possibly be linoleum block prints or original ink sketches. When we viewed them up close using a jeweler's magnifier, we see the fibers in the paper under the ink. This makes us believe they are original art. In addition, the images did not show any dot pixels which would confirm that they are litho prints. The white borders are not mats. They are part of the art work. After receiving the information below, we now know that they are original ink sketches *** UPDATE *** PLEASE READ! A fellow Ebayer reached out to us and gave us more info about the artist as well as facts to confirm these pictures are from Africa. He has a set of similar pictures signed by the same artist that were made for his father. Below is their interesting story which they kindly shared with us regarding these treasures: "G. Mukulu was one of about 10 men working under my father in the Konkola copper mine in Chili La Bombwe in Zambia. It was the largest mine in Zambia and mostly underground. There were periods of time when there wasn't a lot to do. My father was well liked by the workers since he would let them catch a nap behind the boilers on cardboard mattresses. The Sikh or Indian, other bosses wouldn't allow this. They'd find work for the workers to do. My mother says no money was passed between my father and (the artist) Mukulu. They (their pictures) were a gift. She believes he likely made them in the mine where he worked during one of the downtimes using whatever materials at hand such as biro pens. My mother doesn't recall his first name. The pictures were done between 1977 and 1979 in the mine in Zambia. G. Mukulu was a common miner. He worked under my father, who also considered him a friend. The town was called Chili La Bombwe which means croaking frog in Zambian. My mother thinks the pictures have must have come to USA from an ex pat from Zambia who may have been working at the mine at the same time since most miners were rarely likely to travel or leave Zambia". Original online research efforts did not give us any information about this artist nor could we find exact pictures. We know they are from Africa since the artist's surname/last name shows several prominent people in Africa with same name, however none of these people were artists or painters. We found the company who made the custom frames located in Dublin, Ireland. The company ended in the mid 1990's. The solid wood frames are painted in black with clear plexiglass dust covers. The pictures are ready to hang and have hooks on the back. Back of pictures are inscribed by artist. Both say: "Sile Ni Chuirc" on top. They have paper labels which say: "Fine Art Dealers - Picture Framers - Gilders - Print Sellers", "Framed by Art Framing and Bona Crux Ltd., Members of Fine Art Trade Guild", 2 Whitefriar Place, Dublin 8, Phone 754036. Numbers 8N17. CONDITION : In very good vintage condition. Frames show light scuffs and wear on some of the corners. Back paper is slightly yellow from age but secure and in good condition with only a few small splits. Plexiglass coverings have no cracks or deep scratches. It was hard taking photos with the high reflection from the glass. Please note the white streaks you see do not exist on the artwork. It's from the camera/lightning/reflection. MEASUREMENTS : Frames are 10-1/2" wide by 12-1/2" long by 3/8" deep. Images are 7-1/2" wide by 9-1/2" long. Review our photos to confirm that this description matches your expectations. Photos show close-up views of the fine details and overall condition. Questions? Wish to see more photos? Just drop us a message and we'll reply within 12 hours.
